In her new blog, freerangekids.com, New York Sun columnist and Wilmette native Lenore Skenazy pushes back against the "paranoia" that she says infuses parenting. "My parents gave me something I didn't recognize as anything special: freedom. I walked to school, rode my bike to friends' houses, and hung out in the park. And because of that blithe trust in the world—and especially in our neighbors—I grew up trusting people, too. New York City in 2008 is not the same as Wilmette in 1969. But those towns do have one thing in common: safety."
